Bulk foods provide a savings to the consumer of 30% to 60%. Packaging and promotion can be a significant contributor to food cost.
You can make a big difference in your family’s food budget, and a big difference in the impact you make on the environment, by simply buying bulk foods whenever possible.
Packaged products require more labor than bulk. To maintain a policy of first-in-first-out, (FIFO), for example, shelf replenishment requires that older product be pulled from the shelf, new product to be placed at back, and then older product be put at the front. With a gravity-fed bulk bin, however, FIFO occurs “automatically.”
